Dr. William Stetson
Orthopaedic Surgeon | Shoulder, Knee, Elbow, Ankle Specialist | Expert Witness
Dr. Stetson is an award winning orthopaedic surgeon who is double board certified in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine and is the Olympic Team Doctor for the USA Men’s and Women’s Indoor Volleyball Teams. He is a sports medicine and arthroscopy specialist with an expertise in the surgical reconstruction of complex shoulder, knee, elbow and ankle injuries. He graduated from the University of Southern California (USC) with honors (Phi Beta Kappa, Student Athlete of the Year and Two Time NCAA All-American Volleyball Player) and also from the USC Keck School of Medicine with honors. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center where he had extensive experience in trauma and reconstructive surgery. He then did a one year fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy where he trained under the leaders in arthroscopic surgery at the Southern California Orthopaedic Institute (SCOI).
Dr. Stetson has an active clinical, private practice and over 90% of his time is spent seeing patients, doing surgery, teaching and doing clinical research. He has over 25 years of teaching experience as a volunteer professor of orthopaedic surgery at Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center where he teaches the residents orthopaedic surgery and arthroscopy. He has also served as the medical director and on the management committee of out-patient surgery centers. He is the author of over 45 peer reviewed publications and has over 100 national and international presentations. He is a Qualified Medical Examiner (QME) for the state of California and has served as an expert witness for the last 15 years in over 60 cases involving complex personal injury, workers compensation, malpractice and product liability cases.
He has traveled all over the world teaching other surgeons arthroscopic surgery and has been named one of “America’s Top Orthopedists” for 15 straight years by the Consumers’ Research Council of America. He has also just been selected to the 2022 Southern California Super Doctors List. This marks the 11th time in a row he has been selected and he is now part of the Super Doctors Southern California Hall of Fame.
Dr. Stetson is also the founder of the non-profit Operation Arthroscopy (www.operationarthroscopy.org) whose mission is to “Bring Orthopedic Surgery and Arthroscopy to a World in Need.”
In 2020, Dr. Stetson and Dr. Christopher Lee formed Stetson Lee Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine (www.stetsonlee.com) with a common purpose: To provide the best possible orthopaedic care to their patients in a private practice setting. Dr. Stetson Is Team Physician for USA Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Teams
As team physician for USA Men's and Women’s Volleyball teams, Dr. Stetson has traveled with the teams to Japan, Poland, Spain, Brazil, the Netherlands, Bulgaria and many other countries since 2006. He was the team physician for both USA Men’s and Women’s Indoor Volleyball Teams for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England.

Dr. Stetson voted to Super Doctors of Southern California for the 11th year in a row
Dr. Stetson was selected by his peers as an outstanding practicing doctor in Southern California for the 11th year in a row.
After an extensive nomination and research process conducted by MSP Communications, the results will be published in Southern California Super Doctors, a separate publication distributed with the January 2022 issue of the Los Angeles Times. This is Dr. Stetson's 11th consecutive year and he is now an Honoree of the Southern California Hall of Fame for Super Doctors.
Dr. Stetson has again been recognized as one of “America’s Top Orthopedists” for 2022
This is Dr. Stetson's 16th straight year of being selected by the Consumers’ Research Council of America, an independent research company based in Washington, DC. Since that time, he has also been recognized as one of “America’s Top Physicians” and one of “America’s Top Surgeons" by the same group.
The selection process is based on a point value system that awards points for education, years in practice, and affiliations with professional associations. Dr. Stetson invited as speaker at the Romanian International Comprehensive Shoulder Course
Dr. Stetson has again been invited as a guest professor for the 2023 Romanian International Comprehensive Shoulder Course on Rotator Cuff Pathology in Sibiu, Romania February 10th and 11th.
This is the 9th year that Dr. Stetson and his colleague Dr. Guido Marra of Northwestern University have taken part in this course. The mission is to bring modern shoulder surgery techniques to their Romanian colleagues.

Rolling Hills Prep Basketball Team: Go Huskies!
Dr. Stetson and his family are happy to support the Rolling Hills Preparatory Basketball Team as they prepare the CIF basketball playoffs.
One of the team’s star players and starting point guard was unable to receive the necessary shoulder surgery that he needed this Fall in order to return to play. Unfortunately, his insurance did not want to cover his surgery and he had waited over three months but still was not able to get the necessary surgery.
The team’s coach, Harvey Kitani, reached out to Dr. Stetson and asked if he could help. At no cost to the young man or his family, within one week, the arthroscopic shoulder SLAP repair surgery was done and after only 8 weeks, this young man was back on the basketball court.
After the surgery he wrote the following Christmas card note to Dr. Stetson: “Thank you for giving me my senior season of basketball back to me, I will be forever grateful.” Dr. Stetson and his entire team at his office and at the Alameda Surgery Center was happy to help this fine young man who promised to “pay it forward.”
