"Preop exercise reduces need for postop inpatient rehabilitation for arthroplasty patients."

The effects of preoperative exercise on the rehabilitation of patients undergoing hip and knee replacement is the subject of a study published in the current issue of Arthritis Care & Research. In the study, 108 patients were divided into two groups—54 participated in a thrice-weekly exercise program for six weeks prior to surgery, while the rest were given educational materials. The patients from the exercise group were found to have reduced their odds of release to an inpatient rehabilitation facility by 73 percent, and were more likely to be able to walk 50 feet at the time of hospital discharge. These results were noted even though the strength-building portion of the exercise program was well below the duration usually recommended to bring about significant strength gains.

William B. Stetson, MD, Accepted to Leadership Fellows Program

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Orthopaedic surgeon, William B. Stetson, MD, was recently accepted to the Leadership Fellows Program (LFP) of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).  The goal of the program is to inspire young Academy Fellows to take on leadership roles within the AAOS and in orthopaedics.  In general, acceptance to the competitive program provides an invaluable opportunity for recently installed members of the AAOS to work with true leaders in the field.

After earning his medical degree from the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles, California, Dr. Stetson completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Los Angeles County Medical Center and the University of Southern California, Department of Orthopedic Surgery.  He then completed his fellowship at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute.  He is currently an Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California and a senior partner at Stetson Powell Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Burbank, California. His clinical interests include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, knee and elbow.
“It’s truly an honor to be selected for the Academy’s Leadership Fellows Program,” said Dr. Stetson.  “I look forward to interacting with leaders in the orthopaedic community and learning more about issues important to AAOS’ fellows, such as patient-centered care.”

Active in several professional societies, Dr. Stetson serves on the Educational Committee and the Learning Center Committee of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) and lectures throughout the United States and around the world on shoulder arthroscopy.  He is also a member of the American Orthopedic Association of Sports Medicine and is a consulting surgeon for the USA Men’s National Volleyball Team.

The recipient of various awards and honors throughout his career, Dr. Stetson received the Pacific 10 Conference Most Outstanding Scholar Athlete Award, was a 2-time All-American Volleyball player and captain for the University of Southern California Men’s Volleyball Team and graduated Phi Beta Kappa.  He is the author of more than 50 scientific papers and abstracts.

Established in 2001, the highly competitive LFP creates a “leadership legacy” in orthopaedics by identifying promising younger members of the Academy.  This year-long program combines didactic leadership training with ongoing, one-on-one mentoring from established leaders within the orthopaedic community.  With sessions focused on strategic planning, media training, communication skills, and time and stress management, the LFP offers young orthopaedic surgeons the opportunity to explore the meaning and actions of “leadership.” AAOS Fellows - age 45 years or younger - who have a strong desire to develop their volunteer or leadership skills and become more active in the AAOS are eligible for consideration in the program.

An orthopaedic surgeon is a physician with extensive training in the diagnosis and non-surgical as well as surgical treatment of the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.

With more than 29,000 members, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (www.aaos.org) or (www.orthoinfo.org) is the premier not-for-profit organization that provides education programs for orthopaedic surgeons and allied health professionals, champions the interests of patients and advances the highest quality musculoskeletal health. Orthopaedic surgeons and the Academy are the authoritative sources of information for patients and the general public on musculoskeletal conditions, treatments and related issues. An advocate for improved patient care, the Academy is participating in the Bone and Joint Decade (www.usbjd.org) – the global initiative in the years 2002-2011 – to raise awareness of musculoskeletal health, stimulate research and improve people’s quality of life. The AAOS will celebrate its 75th Anniversary at its 2008 Annual Meeting in San Francisco.  Visit www.aaos.org/75years and be a part of the AAOS’ history!
